Surfing Oahu Waves "Aloha Style" in Oahu, Hawaii

Best Time of Year to Surf Oahu, Hawaii

The North Shore:

Of all the islands in Hawaii, Oahu is situated in the best position to receive giant waves generated by the winter storms travelling across the northern Pacific during November to March. Monster size waves and endless barrels crash onto Oahu’s north shore and can reach as high as 20 feet with faces up to 50 feet. These extreme winter waves are for expert surfers only, and even then the conditions are extremely dangerous.

Annual world surfing contests are held from mid November through December such as; The Van's Triple Crown of Surfing, the Rip Curl Cup at Sunset Beach; the XBox Gerry Lopez Pipeline Masters, and The Quiksilver Eddie Aikau Big Wave Invitational, held at Waimea Bay.

By summer, the North Shore waves get flat and glassy not leaving much for surfers to ride. This is when you want to take a look at the waves on the South side.

Waikiki:

Waikiki Beach spans over 2 miles along the south coast of Oahu, just a few miles east of downtown Honolulu. Although the surf found at Waikiki is not the most challenging on the island, it is certainly more reliable and has favourable conditions for surfing and boogie boarding. Waikiki gets a year round swell and practically year round offshore winds – this means that when the waves are flat on the North Shore during the summer months, you can usually find good waves along the south coast of Oahu.

Waikiki has reliable waves almost all year round, however a visit between June to October is when surf conditions will be at their peak – this is when swells from the tropics are most active and you can expect nice long rides. Winter surf is moderate. continue >>
