Best Time of Year to Surf Costa Rica

Costa Rica is a tropical country located fairly close to the equator. The annual temperature on average for most of the country is between 71-81 degrees and the average water temperature on its beaches is 80 degrees. Translation; “leave your wet suit at home!”.

Mid December to April is known as the summer and clean surf season in Costa Rica. The temperatures get very hot, there is very little chance of rain and it attracts very large crowds, especially during the Christmas, New Year’s and Easter holidays; Expect to pay higher prices at this time of year for hotel, rental cars and other necessities. You’ll find great surf conditions along both coastlines and will generally see consistent early morning offshore winds at breaks like Tamarindo, Witches Rock, Grande and Nosara.

May through the end of November is known as the rainy and “major swell” season in Costa Rica. Hot temperatures, sunny skies, and afternoon or early morning rain showers are common. The heavy rain doesn’t usually start coming down until September. The greatest advantage to surfing Costa Rica this time of year are the lower prices and the smaller crowds. Generally you’ll find the best surf conditions in the early morning or late afternoon at breaks such as Playa Hermosa, Dominical and Pavones. Read More >>
