Best Surf Spots in Costa Rica

The Pacific Coast of Costa Rica due to it’s considerable length,when compared to the Caribbean side, offers a larger selection of surf spots and some of the country’s best surf breaks. However, the few breaks that can be found on the Caribbean coast are no less exceptional.

Surf Spots along the North Pacific Coast in Costa Rica:

- Potrero Grande: Right point break with fast and hollow waves accessible only by boat
- Playa Naranjo "Witch’s Rock": One of the best breaks in the country with strong off shore winds December thru March.
- Playa Grande: Reliable beach break just north of Tamarind
- Tamarindo: Celebrated by surfers for its consistent breaks
- Playa Langosta: A right and left point break that curls off a small river mouth
- Avellanas: Great beach break with hollow right and left breaks
- Playa Negra: One of Costa Rica’s top right point breaks with very fast waves
- Nosara: Left and right beach breaks
- Playa Coyote: Beach break with consistent rights and lefts and point breaks
- El Carmen: A long right and short left
- Santa Teresa: Usually bigger than El Carmen, better during low tide
- Playa Hermosa: Left and right beach breaks
- Playa de Los Suecos: Left with fast take off, gets hollow with size and offshore winds
- Punta Barrigona: Long left that wraps round the point.

Surf Spots along the Central Pacific Coast in Costa Rica:

- Boca Barranca: River mouth with a long left break
- Puerto Caldera: Very good left just south of Boca Barranca
- Tivives: Good quality rights and lefts from beach breaks and rocky point
- Jaco: One of the more popular beach breaks due to its central location. Waves are not always dependable.
- Playa Escondida: Point break that forms good lefts and rights
- Roca Loca: A rocky point with rights that break over submerged rocks
- Matapalo: Right point break, good surfing, some claim ‘perfect’ waves

Surf Spots along the South Pacific Coast in Costa Rica:

- Quepos: Small left point at triver mouth
- Playita Manuel Antonio: Beach break with left and rights with decent shape
- Playa El Rey: Beach break with rights and lefts
- Playa Dominical: Good surfing with both right and left breaks
- Drakes Bay: Remote break accessible by boat only has long powerful waves when swell is present
- Pavones: Left point break that can generate rides over a half mile long
- Matapalo: Right point break, good surfing, some claim ‘perfect’ waves

Surf spots along the Caribbean Coast in Costa Rica:

- Playa Bonita: Left break over reef known for its thick and powerful wave
- Black Beach Cahuita: Beach break with good waves all year round
- Puerto Viejo: Very big and tubular. Fast right over a coral reef and probably the biggest waves in the country
- Cocles: Right and left beach breaks, powerful and fun
- Manzanillo: A very fast beach break with consistent right and left breaks
- Westfalia: A stretch of beach breaks with both lefts and rights
- Portete: Small bay with right break off southerly point
- Isla Uvita: Left break on island off coast of Limon accessible by boat
- North Caribbean Coast: Beach break waves accessible by boat or private plane.
